Mentoring with Technology

I am interested in develop a way to mentor students using technology. Kids seem to love texting and posting on their facebook. How can this be used by teachers to help mentor students? Teachers in the news often get in trouble for communicating with students using technology but there must be a way to utilize technology in a meaningful way to mentor students.

Introduction

I am a high school English teacher located in southern Illinois. I work in a very rural school. How rural, you ask? It is surrounded on all four sides by cornfield. That said, I love my job and I work with a great group of kids!

Filtering

I just read the blog from Francisco about filtering, and I immediately thought of filtering in the classroom. I am often torn between filtering for my 4th graders or not. If I filter too much, they may not know how to search for things online once they get home. If I don't filter enough, they will run into inappropriate things!

Reflection on Video

After viewing "A Vision of K-12 Students Today" I feel challenged in my current role an an educator. As a math teacher, I have a tendency to have tunnel vision when and focus solely on teaching the concepts my students need to know. At one point in the video, a student said that they are in school for a job that hasn't even been created yet. Starting the process of of setting this up...

While you would think this site is easy to use, unfortunately it's not that simple. I've been reading about Bloglines, and it seems to me exactly what I needed. A place where all my blogs can be gathered together so I can go to only one spot to get all the information I want, and read at my leisure.
