July 2008 Blog Posts (106)

Website is back up after a 6 month vacation.

I finally brought my classroom website back to life after 6 months of downtime. When the babies arrived I just didn't have the energy to keep it up to date. The url is www.mrcarlsonsclass.com. I've got a ton of material I have to transfer over to the new server so just the home page is up at the moment.

GAMES STRATEGY - FORGIVE AND FORGET

A kindergarten teacher has decided to let her class play a game.

The teacher told each child in the class to bring along a plastic bag containing a few potatoes. Each potato will be given a name of a person that the child hates, so the number of potatoes that a child will put in his/her plastic bag will depend on the number of people he/she hates.

So when the day came, every child brought some potatoes with the name of the people he/she hated. Some had 2 potatoes; some 3… Continue

Wanting the education world to change faster -- we're in a funk

Many in the edublogger community are in a funk this summer. The enumerated reasons vary, but for many, it seems to have to do with trying to change the world and then watching it pretty much stay the same.

After NECC, I personally am left with a strong sense of “preaching to the choir.” The vast majority of people who go to… Continue

The Best Online Learning Games -- 2008

I'm doing an experiment, and came out (early) with a list of my choices for the best online learning games of 2008.

Along with the list, there's a poll where people can vote. We'll see how different the "wisdom of the crowd" is from my own! I'm encouraging teachers to have their students vote, too.

Here's the link to my list and the poll:

What did you learn on your school holidays?

This month's Active Learning Carnival asks "What did you learn on your school holidays?"

I've been thinking about the effects of organized, indoor activities replacing children's outdoor play because of an ad on my television for summer school and because of a presentation I attended on increasing childhood obesity. What do you think?

Al Ain Here I Come!

Well its official, I am off to Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates on the 31st July to work as an ICT in Education Advisor. I spend 4 days initially in Auckland meeting my "team", then we leave for UAE on the 4th August. I will, of course, post pictures of our apartment, which I am waiting to see now, and document my big adventure with pictures and video! So it would be great to share this journey with my Classroom 2.0 friends!

It will be… Continue

Welcome to Shelfari! Read, Share, Explore! - Shelfari

Shelfari is a website devoted to books! Basically an online book club, the site allows users to build a bookshelf of books (generally books they are reading or have read) and share their thoughts on those books with other readers. There are online discussions of books, summaries of books, and you can order books directly from Amazon via the website. Sharing what everyone is reading is a great way to get students, or anyone, interested in reading new books… Continue

To Do List

My son made this list last week:

(Clean room, watch TV, watch movie, play out[side], have fire[campfire], go to bed)

Notice he got most of his list accomplished. Well, actually, his room is NOT clean, but somewhat more picked up. Somewhat. He did do a great job on the watching tv and movie part and he really excelled at playing outside. We didn't have a campfire that night because it was too hot & windy, so he'll have to add that… Continue

I agree with you on the fact that in many low income areas, it is the children who are being left out because of low budgets. Being a teacher in such a situation, many expenses are out of the pocket in order to keep up with the changing techniques in education. Districts need to allocate the money to be spread where it is needed instead of where there… Continue

Circles

http://earth.edublogs.org/

I've been posting about the Vendee Globe for a few months now. I'm hoping that in November 2008 when the sailors leave from France, that students and teachers around the planet will join together to follow this voyage and most importantly to share in this learning experience together. Ten years ago I would never imagine writing this blog post. It was in the past 9 years that I have appreciated the opportunities that are… Continue

Cheap SmartBoard with Wii Remote

I've been trying to set up a Wii Remote using Bluetooth, etc. as a "cheap Smartboard." I've used the instructions, software, etc., from Johnny Wu's website. I haven't been able to get the Blue Soliel software to install. I've downloaded it several times and gone through the install process, but it "hangs up" near the end of the install. Has anyone used the process successfully? Can you make any suggestions or give me some feedback?

Thanks,
Jan McGee

The first kids open dictionary

I am very excited to (finally) be able to show the new project we've been working on -- the first kids open dictionary. The first phase of this is the collaborative, wiki-based dictionary builder. If you have a second, check out the site and make a quick addition to a definition (or edit one someone else has done).

This project grew out of the need we have seen in classrooms and other informal learning environments for a dictionary… Continue

Fireflies in Iowa

July in Iowa = a BAJILLION fireflies!

I don't care who you are or how old you are, fireflies are amazing. Our farmyard was full of them tonight and I just couldn't get enough of watching them flicker on and off like a symphony of Christmas lights.

When I typed in "fireflies" in the search box of www.teachertube.com, this came up. (I bet this dude's a reader!) Enjoy!

BTW, I know, I know, fireflies… Continue

To my recently added friends

To all my new Classroom 2.0 friends (most of whom chose me as a friend in a workshop) I welcome your participation in this network. I hope to be a better contributor in the coming months.

NECC was great. I think my favorite part is talking to other attendees and learning what is happening in other schools. I left San Antonio a little overwhelmed, but ready to start another school year with fresh ideas. I'm still convinced that web2.0 tools will greatly impact learning.
