As I've said on Twitter lately, I've been hanging around in the tech and education blogospheres so long that I finally feel really to participate and contribute rather than just lurk and learn. I've been hesitant because A) I don't have lots of free time (I'm sure none of you out there have that issue?!) and B) I am not convinced I have anything new to add or say. It's a waste of time and space to blog about nothing, right? I have a long way to grow.

On the last day of our intergenerational program, we were left with chills , the kind of chills come from encountering a moment of life’s truth, of boundaries crossed that connect all people across time.
I’d been bringing the kids out to the senior home once or twice a month all year. For this particular visit the kids had spent a good while preparing; they knew the stories of their elders “by heart“ and were going to present the stories as a goodbye gift. These kids were experienced… Continue

Hello, I’m a senior majoring in Elementary Education. My home town is Garnett which is located about one hour south of Kansas City. I am married with one kid, one dog, and two cats. I am very interested in taking this course per I will be perusing a Master’s of Science in Technology from Pitt State in the fall of 2008. I come from a family of educators and enjoy the life that is associated with this profession. I am a full…
Update - Australia, the blocking of snt for learners and kids at home (the porn filter) and the interesting USE of snt by those in politics - Mr Howard, Mr Rudd. I had a chuckle when I realised that the government had put out a youtube to promote joining the defence forces during the gap year and at the same time, they were busy behind the scenes blocking the very people that, one would have thought was a key market. You maybe interested in this update. It appears that the incredible… Continue

I am absolutely mad about Google MyMaps. Check out the collectively authored map my YouthLAB groups did in Chicago and Barbados at www.youthlab.net! They researched the slave routes, the Barbados youth located the African countries and regions where their ancestors came from and placemarked those. They even added in diary journal entries from enslaved passengers across the Middle Passage.
Then they incorporated their own family migrations, located their neighborhoods, embedded photos… Continue

I wrote this summer about my plans to use a Ning network in my digital photo class. I created the network, making it private and disabling the ability of members to invite other members. No photo would be posted until I approved it. However, our tech department could not approve it because of the inappropriate networks within Ning. They said that my network was secure enough but there is no way to keep the students away from the inappropriate content in some of the other… Continue
Google ready to invade telco turf, bid on 700MHz spectrum.
(via arstechnica.com)
Because the 700MHz has such desirable spectrum propagation characteristics, it's also much cheaper and easier to roll out a network with excellent coverage than it is to do so with higher-frequency technology. Making broadband access cheap and affordable means more people come online, and more people are able to make use of Internet services-exactly the sort of thing Google…
"I don’t think we do any type preparation for things like that. We love to show kids the benefits of technology, and how wonderful it is, but we rarely show them the downside. We show them how the Internet…
We spent today getting flashdrives ready for the staff. When the staff reports to work for the first time on Monday they will receive one piece of paper with instructions for the week. One of the instructions is about…
Well, summer's over, and it's time to ratchet up the educational energy
level to classroom teaching mode, again. After constructing and
conducting our faculty first days Professional Development Days
activities, based on this summer's Professional Learning Community
Institutes, it's good to be back...I LOVE this gig, and can't imagine
ever doing anything else...well, I guess I never really have.

One of the ways to connect the real world with the virtual world, is by collaborating with others who do this on a daily basis. One of the most established online groups that continue to develop ways for online teacher and student participation among the entire digital population is the Monarch Watch program. …
A brief update on my son's progress, this week - the week he has begun his learning journey at home.
Zane has created a blog amongst other things, just in a few days this week. It was all new to him, although he did say, that creating his blog was similar to setting up his myspace, which he did ages ago on his own.
You will find updates on his blog as he goes along.
This blog entry originally appeared on my Byte Speed Blog Site on April 30, 2007. Enjoy.

Welcome to my first post, dedicated to my current vision of Web 2.0, and how I might use it in teaching middle school.
Web 2.0 is the "read/write" web, the interactive web. It's called 2.0, according to Wikipedia, the ground-breaking, interactive, editable online encyclopedia, because this new environment includes technologies such as blogs, podcasts, wikis, and social networking sites that imply a significant change in web usage. Visit… Continue
