The Adventure Begins...

As I've said on Twitter lately, I've been hanging around in the tech and education blogospheres so long that I finally feel really to participate and contribute rather than just lurk and learn. Australia blows 84 million on a filter! Sad but True!

Update - Australia, the blocking of snt for learners and kids at home (the porn filter) and the interesting USE of snt by those in politics - Mr Howard, Mr Rudd.

I had a chuckle when I realised that the government had put out a youtube to promote joining the defence forces during the gap year and at the same time, they were busy behind the scenes blocking the very people that, one would have thought was a key market.

Google My Maps has Serious Educational Potential

I am absolutely mad about Google MyMaps. Check out the collectively authored map my YouthLAB groups did in Chicago and Barbados at www.youthlab.net! They researched the slave routes, the Barbados youth located the African countries and regions where their ancestors came from and placemarked those. They even added in diary journal entries from enslaved passengers across the Middle Passage.

Couldn't Pass Tech Security!

I wrote this summer about my plans to use a Ning network in my digital photo class. I created the network, making it private and disabling the ability of members to invite other members. No photo would be posted until I approved it. However, our tech department could not approve it because of the inappropriate networks within Ning. Because the 700MHz has such desirable spectrum propagation characteristics, it's also much cheaper and easier to roll out a network with excellent coverage than it is to do so with higher-frequency technology. Making broadband access cheap and affordable means more people come online, and more people are able to make use of Internet services-exactly the sort of thing Google…

Well, summer's over, and it's time to ratchet up the educational energy

My son Zane begins his homeschooling journey using social networking tools and technologies

A brief update on my son's progress, this week - the week he has begun his learning journey at home.

Zane has created a blog amongst other things, just in a few days this week. It was all new to him, although he did say, that creating his blog was similar to setting up his myspace, which he did ages ago on his own.

Commercially yours

I have noticed a trend, probably because You Tube makes it easy to do, of adding commercials into keynotes, staff developments, presentations,

etc.

For instance, I have added Apple's classic "Think Different" commercial in a variety of trainings over the years.

Recently, my Superintendent added an ad into a presentation to administrators about constructing an airplane in flight.
