Model Schools Conference

I had the exciting opportunity to attend the Model Schools Conference held in Orlando, Florida (yes, DisneyWorld!) back in June. The conference was run by the International Center for Leadership in Education. After attending a wide variety of lectures over the 2 1/2 days I had three main takeaways in the areas of brain research, technology and the (near) future of education.

Back-To-School Tech Byte

I could give an excuse here about why I haven't been blogging, but the truth is I have never achieved blogging regularity and I especially wasn't motivated to do so during the summer. I continue to battle with the reality that I have nothing new to say - whenever I am inspired on a topic it seems that 5-10 people in the edublogosphere or Twitter have already discussed it and I rarely have a more original thought than theirs. Not just about the tool...

I started out my career as a middle school classroom teacher teaching computer literacy and language arts. Go figure. At the time I was asked to teach "what" a computer was, not really "how" to teach writing and literature using a computer. Being the rebel, I thought I would kill two birds with one stone by having student learn about main idea and supporting detail through learning how to use a word processor and a floppy disk. Second Draft

I've got a new focus to work with for my PD for next year: itunes sharing. Computers on the same network can share itunes playlists and I am considering sharing professional learning videos and podcasts. There are subscription sites like PD360.com but the act of creating our own podcasts could help with teacher reception and use.

Do anyone have an ipod? and Do you put professional materials on it?

YouTube annotations

YouTube have a beta tool - annotations. I'm sure more features will appear soon as YouTube have acquired Omnisio but this will have huge implications in any curriculum area where the creation of media is core. I teach music and I've been waiting for something like this for a long time!

(WSI) Website Investigation: An Introduction to Information Forensics.

Carl and I concluded our first run of (WSI) Website Investigation: An Introduction to Information Forensics. This is a fully facilitated Moodle based online class. We had a lot of fun and the participants were great. We also radically underestimated the amount of time the course would take. We figured 5 hours in one week. When we polled the class everyone reported taking far more time with each case study.
