I spent this past week (July 30 - Aug 4) with 175 teenagers helping fix houses that were impacted by Hurricane Rita in Lake Charles, LA 2 years ago. There is still plenty of work to do, but we made a dent.

Our Summer Academies around the state went very well (despite the day we had to teach blogs/wikis without the Internet!). Here are some of the great project started by our teachers from
Wellston and
North Union.

The article is another reflecting the impact, the net and in particular social networking tools are having on business practices globally.
Another reason maybe to ensure on campus access to the tools, environments and experiences, that I believe must integrated into formal learning at all levels globally.

This is our second year of training teachers who are receiving laptops. This year had our teachers group themselves voluntarily into two sections, medium and medium-plus. Last year they were grouped by department/division. While last year they were with their colleagues, this year they are with teachers who are at the same level (with regard to technology) as themselves. The teachers seem to be more comfortable, and it is great to see people from different divisions and departments making…

Some see the advent of Web 2.0-style tools in the classroom heralding a
shift in everything from education theory to how schools are built. The
bottom line: traditional lecturing may be on its way out, said Claire
Schooley, an analyst at Forrester Research who follows learning trends
at universities and corporations.

"It feels like the early days of the Internet," says Steve Prentice, a vice-president at Gartner Research (IT ). Gartner estimates that by 2011, 80% of Internet users and major companies will have
avatars, or digital replicas of themselves, for online work and play.

I have long held the belief that "Students who actively do Science learn and love the subject!" I also am a firm believer that along with inquiry and experimentation there needs to be a sharing of information. I have set a goal to change how information is shared this year by implementing more Web 2.0 into my lessons. I have a strong opinion that after students have learned through inquiry, they naturally want to share this information with others. I hope to provide a positive report on both…

Hi everyone.
Sorry I have been so quiet. Summer vacations, kidney stones, kids with broken wrists...it has been quite a summer.
Anyway, will be getting going soon. In the meantime, here is a podcast on a really cool program called "Jazz Up Your Curriculum With Video Conferencing"

How many blogs is too many blogs? I really like the look of this Ning community, but I'm not quite sure how I will deal with yet another blog to write! How do other people deal with that? I assume most of you are already blogging elsewhere, so do you write stuff here too? I think I'd be splitting my energy a little too much if I started seriously doing that.
For those that might not know, I also write a blog over at
www.betchablog.com, which is…

Since the beginning of the school year is near, I have been searching for innovative ways to work with my students using technology as a way of conveying information. I have been researching tools like Moodle, Blogging, Whiteboard, Podcasting, etc. I am at a loss at this point. There are so many interesting ways to include technology in instruction. Let's face it - technology is vital in our classrooms if we truly want to prepare our students for life after graduation and there is so much of it…

This week I'm writing a
series on technology and "The Achievement Gap" on
my social desktop.
This is the second part of the series which takes concepts introduced by
"The Achievement Gap" and puts them into a larger cultural context.
Administrators and educators in the United States are faced with
balancing federal mandates like the "No Child Left Behind Act" and
state concerns…

I am looking for some killer projects using technology that will allow students to go deep into one subject and kill several state standards with one stone, so to speak. I had lots of luck with a dual credit English composition course through the University of Missouri /Kansas City the last couple of years, but I wish I had given them more to work with. Basically, we were studying the 60's student protest era, and their assignment was to become experts on one event--Kent State… Continue

I feel I'm only now getting my feet wet with Web 2.0 technologies and I'm already hearing rumbles of people whispering Web 3.0 plans. Even though I've been in the technology area of education for nearly 10 years now, I still get those moments where I feel the "angst" of the classroom teacher. That being, "given the time available to me, is it really worth trying to keep up with these new ideas?" Thankfully, it's something I enjoy and look…

I just posted the beginnings of an idea (on my very dormant blog), if you have the time I am interested to know what you think.
The beginnings of an idea, "teach my students and I'll teach yours".
- Teachers create and publish online 1 collaborative distance learning "project" - this could be achieved by opening different groups on ning, imbee, haiku, edu20 etc.
- Individual students would…
