Classroom 2.0 Reflection

I think that Google Apps will be one of the primary tools that we use in our classroom in the next few years. As Google Apps has grown (and waged war on Office), more and more districts are using just google instead of purchasing updated versions of Office. I think that Google has some inherent advantages in that is saves to the cloud, doesn't require licenses or computer software, can be used on any computer, and can be shared with others. One very important advantage it has it is the…

Online Learning Reflection

I’ve been actively involved in an online course through Treehouse (www.treehouse.com). Here I’ve been learning Java Script coding to learn how to create applications for the Android operating system. Each course is broken up into stages, which are broken into various videos, quizzes, and what are called code challenges. For example, the lesson Building a Simple Android App, is broken into 6 stages. In the first stage, there’s an introduction…

Google Apps

Google Apps has created programs that allow teachers to integrate into their classrooms to help students experience technology. These apps can help me be more efficient as an educator by allowing my students to integrate technology into their learning and experience it for themselves. Gmail allows students to have the responsibility of checking their own mailbox (it is always fun receiving mail when you are young!) but has a component for teachers to have an administration…

Reflection on Online Courses

When I was first introduced to this assignment of learning more about online education I was very excited. As a teacher who is not one hundred percent enthused about the schools available to her family, I immediately thought that online education might be an option for my family. I, myself have taken tons of online courses, mot with wild success. As a student that didn’t thrive in traditional education. I truly believed that full online education, building 21st century skills…

AUTHENTIC TRANSFORMATIONAL VS PSEUDO-TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP

The term transformational was first coined by J.V Downton in 1973 (Downton, 1973). However, significant insight of transformational leadership was added by James Burn in 1978 through his publication, Leadership (Burns, 1978).  The transformational model was expanded by Bass as his theory gave rise to a transformational continuum with three modes namely transformational, transactional and laissez-faire leadership (Bass, 1985).  Later as the scope of the study of expanded, a second dimension…

Experiencing Free/Open Source Courses

We were asked to search and enroll in a free/open source course that we were interested in. The idea was for us to experience a type of online learning that is available. I spent quite a while searching for free/open source courses. A lot of them that I discovered were through universities (MIT, Yale, etc.). I decided to see what courses they were offering. None of the university courses were educationally related. They offered courses in business, science, math, history,…

Virtual Reality Reflection

As I reflect on virtual reality in education, I’m not sure I see the benefits of systems like Minecraft and Second Life. I understand that there are teachers who have found ways to create, simulate, and collaborate within these environments however, I wonder if learning is really occurring. In some of my research I found that Second Life hosts “virtual learning” landscapes where students log in virtually and go participate in learning excursions, build simulations, etc.…
