The enduring allure of talking about yourself

Using Classroom 2.0's profile I'm reminded of why Facebook and Google+ hold such attraction for people. It's essentially an advertising board for yourself and everything you're interested in. It allows you to collect all the things that catch your interest throughout the day when no one else is there to see it with you then make sure your friends and acquaintances have a chance to be in on it too. Given that kids and teenagers especially love talk about themselves, schools are…

Lesson Ideas for Social Studies and Technology Integration

Fortunately for social studies teachers, many aspects of study in the content areas lend themselves to technology integration. Whether it be researching and creating spreadsheets with data, generating graphs or charts, or creating Web scavenger hunts, ideas abound for using technology in your social studies class today. Using your standards as a guide, modify any of the following ideas to fit your curriculum goals.…

My philosophy of education

http://youtu.be/O5UKTeUxakw

My own philosophy of education relies on being eclectic.  My philosophy of education takes elements of TRPS (Teaching Proficiency through reading and story telling) Dr. Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences. I love combining different teaching methods. Specifically, I love combing the Grammar Translation Method, that is based on having students translate texts based on grammar rules, The Direct…

Exploring New Social Networks

Honestly, I have never heard of Ning.  I can understand the usefulness as far as networking and learning from peers.  But, it may take me awhile to become a regular user.  I have been a Facebook user for many years and it is a habit to "check my page" several times a day.  Could Ning become as addictive?  Maybe...

New to Classroom 2.0

I am new to Classroom 2.0. This is my first time signing up and I think it is an excellent tool to find resources and ideas. I've already had some time to quickly browse a few blogs, member pages and groups. It is great to have this bank of resources easily accessible and well organized. The process of setting up my own account and page went smoothly. There was just some basic information to add and the next step is to find colleagues. I still have some formating to do and some color to add,… Continue

Social Networking in the Classroom

Our students have actually been far ahead of us as teachers in the world of social networking. A powerful tool that creates instant connection and access to resources from all over the world, social networking has long been in the hands of our students. Since schools have been slow to embrace social networking, students took to self teaching themselves about this new technology. Unfortunately, the majority of students taught themselves to utilize social networking for social and…

Great Educational Podcasts for 2nd Grade

We try utilizing some of these podcasts in my 2nd grade classroom.  Some of them are used as a whole class, and then others are used on individual student laptops or iPods.

My experience with classroom 2.0

It seemed fairly simple to sign up for the classroom 2.0 site that I can use to collaborate. The hardest part was waiting for approval. I haven't done much to my page yet, but changing the look of my page was very simple. There has been little that takes more than a couple of clicks to change. Navigation seems fairly easy, though the first page has a lot to look through. Adding my picture took just a minute. It seems to be very user friendly.

Social Networking in Education

I have been doing a lot of reading and a lot of thinking about social networking and if it can be effectively used in the classroom as an educational tool.

I am always surprised to hear how many schools ban social networking in the classroom when it can be used to help improve students' learning.

Instead of banning social networking in the classroom, schools should be working on ways to educate students on the proper use(s) and teachers on the proper way(s) to implement…

Authentic Professional Development

The job of the educator can often seem daunting and thankless.  We live in the "caves" or our classrooms and spin on our hamster wheels, trying to stay on top of lesson plans, student relationships, our learning environment, grading, and administrative requirements.  A huge challenge is finding the necessary and critical time to look out of our caves and both improve our professional skills and take a breath of fresh air.  To me, this is the real power of Web 2.0 for the educator.  The web…

Fun and Creativity squashed in the Real World of Education

This post serves the purpose of providing a post for Web 2.0 at WOU ning assignment 5a.  It also highlights that in a real world of education, fun is a necessary and often forgotten component.  Here is a link to a short podcast I made for the podcasting class.  If you have an extra minute or two, and need a laugh, check it out.

Wordles

Hi Class,

I found this to be an interesting project, and I enjoyed taking the time to complete it very much. I use word walls in my class often I put them on the board daily. I never thought about or took the time to explore an option like this, and I am glad this project came up. I will be incorporating this into my lesson plans. My students have computers on their desks, and I have control of all of them through mine I will be creating a word wall, and changing their…

Replacement for iWeb?

Does anyone know of an easy to use and free web based site where you can upload the html files from a former iWeb site.  iWeb is no longer supported in our district and there are quite a few teachers that aren't very knowledgeable with building a website that don't want to rebuild their site.

Thanks!
