Einstein said ‘Never memorize what you can look up in books’, so why do we focus so much on what we learn as opposed to how we learn? I don’t believe that the objective of education should be the memorization of facts. Instead it should be focused on the acquisition of useful skills.
Since it's midterms time for college students, I decided to find out what everyone thinks. Currently I have many friends who are stressed out and tired from studying for tests. I cannot necessarily relate because for the most part my midterms are writing papers. Personally, they both have their pros and cons. I feel that I retain information better when I have to write a paper because I am heavily involved in what I am writing about and I feel that I need to have mastered the information in… Continue
I just finished reading The Learning Leader, by Douglas R. Reeves, as a part of my doctoral studies. I found the book to be
extremely well written, as well as extremely valuable for anyone looking
to gain a more in-depth understanding of school improvement.
As districts and schools look to both district and building leaders, it
is difficult not to notice the "Islands of Excellence," as well as the
islands of… Continue

Have you ever watched a teenager prepare for the DMV Learner's Permit test? If you have, then you'll know what I mean when I say that it is an excellent example of Assessment FOR Learning.
(As an aside, I'm having a hard time coming to grips with the fact that my oldest child is now learning to drive a car. Kaitlin is everything I could ask for in a daughter with…
This yearly report is becoming the Gold standard in the information Security field.
It can be used to Identify real threats to any organizations data and data systems.
For example, one recent finding concerns Malware Customization: "We are not so happy to say that the increase in customized malware we reported last year appears not to be a fluke limited to 2008. 2009 revealed a similar proportion of breaches (54% of those involving malware) and an incredible 97% of the…
I'm putting out a call for help from all who are willing to share their ideas.
Situation: A fellow teacher, "Jane," is trying to build relationships with her students, but is not having a lot of success. She teaches Algebra II, and the students do not like her class because it is hard. Last week we looked at 5 free online picture and image editing tools that I had seen mentioned in this Campus Technology article. A few readers responded to this post and mentioned some other tools they liked. I took a look at these tools, and share…
lORD OF THE FLIES Jack loses his sense of identity in that he slowly becomes more and more savage. It starts simply enough with his hesitation at killing the first pig they see on the island, but later morphs into a kind of paranoia that he cannot maintain any sort of importance or control on the island without proving himself capable of hunting pigs. Used to being a leader, he is completely thrown off when he is not voted chief, and as he instills more and more fear into the other boys,… Continue

Tom Whitby has encouraged all education bloggers to write a positive blog on how we should reform the
educational setting. I have decided to revisit a previous post of
mine...
If you have ever walked into a factory that produces a finished good from raw materials, it is frankly an amazing process. Dating back to the early 1900's, Henry Ford revolutionized…
This past week at school has been particularly busy, and unfortunately this means not getting to spend a lot of time with my two favorite
girls. Coming home from meetings, training sessions, and classes late
at night are all the perfect ingredients for an exhausted and mentally
drained educator. We all have experienced work weeks like this...work
weeks that never seem to end and never seem to give you a moments… Continue

Personal branding has its roots in personal success psychology as well as in marketing. As people work through the process there is a significant focus on communication skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing.…
