Movies and Philosophies of Education

Click to take the quiz about your own philosophy of education

I've written lots about philosophies of education. How important they are to develop and sustain.  A lot of what is "stress" in today's teaching world, derives from teachers working in settings that conflict with their own underlying philosophy of education - often, the teacher not really even knowing that this conflict… Continue

Interesting conference in VA

Saw an ad for a conference May 4-6 in Virginia on learning and the brain. It will focus on how digital tech is altering attention, instruction, and intervention with today's students. It is co-sponsored by Johns Hopkins University School of Education.

It is 12:30 at night, so it's Monday anyway. I'm going to bed and will reflect bright and early in the morning on such subjects as assessments and lesson plans.

The power of social media

I am posting these 2 links to show the power of social media.  The first one is a rally cry to the public to help stop bullying following the tragic suicide of an Ottawa teenager earlier this week (Oct 15).  The first video was made on Oct 18.

The second link is to a video made by members of the Canadian Parliament.  Again note the date: Oct 20.

Podcasts

My husband has downloaded Podcasts for years and spends most of his time traveling in a vehicle with headphones in his ears listening to them... catching up on the world, the world of sports and his talk-shows.  Until recently, I never understood why he liked them so much... but now I, too, spend a lot of my travel time listening to Podcasts.  We both download them to our phones, plug in our headphones and go.  My recent favorites include: "Children's Book Radio", "Meet the Author",…

Apps

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for good music ed software to use at the elementary level.  My school is fortunate enough to have many iPads, and I would love to get my kids using them if there are apps out there that are worth it.  Any thoughts?

Top Ten Reasons to Attend Edcamp

There are so many reasons why anyone in the education industry should be attending as many Edcamps as possible, but instead of reinventing a list, I simply cultivated some of my favorites. Here are my Top 10 Favorite Reasons To Attend An Edcamp from various blogs:

  1. It is free.
  2. Hierarchies do not exist at an Edcamp. Regardless of his or her perspective, each participant’s ideas and contributions are equally respected.

Who is my teacher? Who isn't my teacher?

This is the question a couple of my students could be asking themselves, having just been awarded third prize in a state-wide immunology competition. This is their entry...

The curious thing about this is that these students found out about the competition not from their "teacher" (in the official sense), but from one of our Virtual… Continue
