Are you an unmarried woman over 25? Then according to an old Quebec tradition, you'd be a "
Catherinette!" But don't worry… put on your apron and start pulling some taffy!
But where does this custom come from?
Here!

It’s the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and goodness, gracious do I need to give me some thanks for this ning. I mean wow! It’s changed my professional life.
Last Thanksgiving, I am not sure if I even knew what a ning was. This Thanksgiving, I am pretty resolved at this point to not even bother to write any more professional development books (even though a host of publishers are asking me to do so right now) simply because I am pretty much scratching every “write a book of…

Integrating computer games into existing CS courses may help attract students to the field, but there are guidelines to be considered.
Since computing is the foundation of modern society, a proficient computing work force is essential for maintaining the country's leadership and competitiveness in the global economy. The recent decline in enrollments across computer science (CS) departments and the decrease in student diversity pose significant challenges to the continuation of the…

Facebook has become an essential tool for young adults to stay in contact with friends and family and to create a sense of community with their peers. For school administrators, then, utilizing Facebook to improve communication and to create an interactive experience for their school community only makes sense.

There comes a tiredness with having attended a big conference, a sense of exhilarated exhaustion that inevitably catches up to almost all attendees that do not live in the host city.
However, it’s the good kind of “spent”, the kind that comes with having tapped into a host of personal reserves.
For me, the draining derives as a result of a few different things.
1) All the energy inside the conference itself. You can just feel the buzz on Day 1. By…

This holiday season, Yahoo! For Good wants to start
a ripple of kindness around the world.
Like Yahoo! I believe that it doesn’t necessarily take a great deal of money or time to spread happiness – sometimes it can be the simplest things like providing people with clean water.
If you're like me, you don't spend too much time thinking about water - it's everywhere we go. When we're thirsty, we flip a handle or push a…

I teach at an environmental magnet elementary school in a small town in west central Minnesota. We are in a very rural area which I love but it would be great if my class of fourth graders could learn more about life in an urban area. I am interested in blogging with another 4th grade classroom in an urban area. Let me know if you are interested.

The 4th post in a series in which we have been learning about Interactive Whiteboards for the classroom.
Three weeks ago I started this effort with
a post in which I researched market leaders and confirmed that the ubiquitous SMART Board is the clear market leader (with about 50% market share). Of the many other manufacturers that split the rest of this…

How do you think?
To answer that question you need to introspect and look deep in your mind and observe. This discussion will explore human consciousness especially as it pertains to education. I was involved in neuropsychology and learning disabilities for a long time and I have found some unique relationships. It is important to understand how your students think. But before you can do that, you need to know what makes you tick. Introspect with me.
When I ask "How do you…

As we enter Thanksgiving week it really is a time for me to recognize how much my students mean to me. I truly am a better human being because they are in my life.
They make me smile, laugh, hurt, angry, and tear up. They also make me proud, ashamed, hopeful and fearful.
And sometimes they do this back to back to back as if it's all happening in the same day.
But without a doubt, the kids in my classroom make me remember what it's like to be a kid...…
