ISTE SIGVE in "soft opening" phase

Hey, all,

Discussions are still underway about the scope and mission of the newest Special Interest Group at ISTE, but I'd like to welcome you to join in to any degree your already busy schedules will allow. As you'll note, we're looking for participants who may not even be ISTE members (yet) but who are experienced and/or interested in virtual worlds of any ilk. I can let you know that what was formerly the Second Life Playground at previous… Continue

The Lords of District Oversight that Ban the Reading of Novels in English Class

Is there such a thing as an English class that doesn't read a single, real, whole book over the course of the year? I mean I know there is. Some places -- WAY TOO MANY in fact -- have the The Lords of District Oversight that Ban the Reading of Novels in English Class

That's right, they mandate that NO NOVELS be taught.

It's all excerpts, pieces taken from anthologies, worksheets, scripted programming and... biggest of all, practice tests to prepare for the real… Continue

Learning about Collaborative Technology

Although I am working on my Masters in Educational Technology, I find there is so much out there to learn. This field, the technology and how it is used in education, is almost overwhelming. I think I need to pinpoint how I would like to use these applications and which ones would be best suited for what I am using it for.

Why We are Throwing A Bash to Celebrate Kids and Literacy!!

Look, I could rail on and on and on about why I believe it is entirely appropriate to throw a HUGE bash at NCTE to actually celebrate students.

But instead, I am going to let a student do the talking. (Please know that she is but one of the young poets you will see on Saturday night at NCTE in Philly if you come to the event... and when you are done, I'd ask you to reflect upon the question, "Isn't it about time we did a better job of validating the aptitudes of our kids in… Continue

Is online learning good?

Online learning cannot actually replace the learning obtained from regular schools. However, with technology advancement internet can be leveraged effectively as supplemental method of studying.

We are seeing a lot of activity in the current times combining Web 2.0 and Education. There is a new social network or platform coming up every day. I wonder, which one will make a difference to me and work as a collaborative online learning platform.

With some research, I have… Continue

Times They Are A-Changing

To quote the legendary Bob Dylan's famous song, "The times they are a-changin'". I am now currently teaching Math to some of the best and brightest students this side of New York. Each and everyone of them makes me proud as they have the skills in analytics and understanding numbers that may just surpass other schools.

But regarding more about me, I mentioned that times indeed change because just a few years back, I was the student and I was the one making fun of other people, or… Continue

Here's a list… Continue
