Teaching Philosophy
My decision to become a science teacher did not occur without deliberate soul-searching. After four years in the media literacy and technology reform, my heart led me to live with my dream of becoming an eight (8th) through ninth (9th) grade science. Essentially, I feel there is nothing in this world more imperative than helping students to explore and advance themselves in science. However, the effort and the supports to battle interruption, building…

I love MediaWiki. It is the engine of the Wikipedia and a great environment to work with.
That being said, it is more complex to install and administrate than many web 2.0 platforms.
Can anyone recommend a simpler free and open source wiki that is easier to install and administer?
I'm not interested in hosted solutions--just open source that one could run on shared server space.

Hi everyone, I have recently produced a directory of free web-based tools that can be used in the classroom. I have almost 200 tools listed with short reviews and example screenshots. I am currently on a study break from school funded by the Farmington Institute, Oxford. It has been great to have the time away from the classroom to see what is available out there and I have been amazed at how powerful some of these tools are. Anyway, feel free to use the website to search for tools you may want…

Here are some informations taken from the EFODL conference in Charleroi (Belgium) and presented by Jean-Luc Deladrière from
Hanabi...
He based his presentation on the fact that we can very well learn while playing and mindmaps offer, to his opinion a fun way to learn. He uses mindmaps with teenagers as well as adults in school or in a professional context. He states that results are…

I have close to ten Web 2.0 tools to present in 50 minutes. This should be alright if the Internet is fast at school. But it wasn't when I checked yesterday. So here I am, adding more slides with screenshots just in case I won't be able to download fast enough.
Well, this is Plan C. Plan B is to download all the sites before the presentation, and minimize the screen.
The tools I will be presenting, with examples by teachers and students…

... is understanding better the actual financial crisis. We have never talked so much about money since we've been told that we could lack some soon.
But do you know how money really works? Do you know the mecanisms behing money creation? We often believe that money is created by country states but it is only partly true. Most of it is created by banks, using debts to do so.
To understand money matters, here is a…

For many, today is a joyous occasion, one that bring the promise of change and the hope of prosperity. I am thankful that my voice and my vote mattered and that it is still a freedom that I have, regardless of the turnout. I will support my president. Like no time in our history, has the power of the Internet, Web 2.0 and technology in general had an impact on bringing out the power of community. So many came out and so many voiced their support with such tools as…

I'm doing th Web 2.0 presentation with an elementary computer teacher. But he's going to present first and focus on sample lessons for the elementary teachers. When my turn comes I'll be giving examples for the middle and high school teachers. We met today, and I was disappointed that he had been having problems accessing the PowerPoint and Word files I uploaded to Google Docs -- some problems with Internet speed at school or maybe the firewall and pop-up blockers, who knows.
But we…

SANTA'S STORIES COME TO LIFE
Please share with your students if you like.
I bet you have all heard of Santa Clause, in fact I know you have because of all the millions of letters I receive each year from you all, but I imagine that most of you do not know very much about where I live and all of the creatures who live with me in the North Pole and help me make Christmas so special.
I was concerned…

With two more days left before my presentation at our school I told my husband I need to prepare the handout tomorrow. He suggested instead that I put my handout online, so teachers can easily click on the links, rather than type the URL themselves.
I said, "What a great idea!"
But now I'm not' sure if I want to post it on my wiki, blog, or create a regular web page. I even considered Google Documents, but realized there are teachers who don't have Gmail…

I typically start my morning hour checking email,

My friend Ryan once told me, "it's all about feeds." This was probably 2 years ago and we were talking about Web 2.0 things and the semantic web--ideas which like cloud computing are a stretch for my imagination, even now. I understand more about feeds, but I'm no expert. When I subscribe to a feed, content is delivered to me or more specifically to my reader. My reader, in my case, Google Reader, brings all of my feeds together in one spot:…

I am a high school Math teacher at an alternative high school. I am currently implementing the use of a SMART Airline Slate into my classrooms and increasing the use of interactive technologies for learning. My students have been given baseline tests for their Math skills and they have evaluated the use of technology within the school. I will continue to update the progress of the interactive technology integration in the Math classroom each week on this blog.

Should computers be the focus of all activity? They can certainly connect people in far distant place, and provide curriculum that local sources are not able to provide. (This is the "why AP is good" argument.)
What about socialization ?? Children socialized to computers are not socialized to each other!
There are subtle social cues that one learns only from in the flesh interaction. Let me let you about the 18 year olds who "invade space"!
Education is a PUBLIC GOOD.…
