My trip to Italy

This past summer I went to Italy for two weeks. I took a tour and was initially scared about traveling with a group of people I didn't know, but the people were great! We partied, took in the sites and I made life long friends!

Parent-Teacher Interviews 2.0

Cross-posted to blog of proximal development

Yesterday, we had our first parent-teacher interviews for the current academic year. Some of my colleagues don’t like them. I do.

I enjoy parent-teacher interviews because I always see them as an opportunity to reflect on what I’ve accomplished with each individual child. Getting ready for parent-teacher interviews is an opportunity

for reflection and self-assessment. It’s an…

Exciting Possibilities

I just got home from a few days in Colby kansas. I always love visiting the schools and educators in this unique city and am energized by the conversations that I get to have. They call me out to be a part of an ideation process a few times a year and it is usually an intense process. This district employs people in leadership that really work hard to bring new tools to their learners and empower them to be successful.

The first thing you notice about Colby is that the town is West,… Continue

Ning answers questions

I was a little lost - had just enough ideas and information to know roughly were I wanted to go, but not the best route to get there. First I blogged it on my own blog, then I went looking for answers. I found similar questions and GREAT resources/answers right here at the Classroom 2.0 ning. The ability to search by tool, subject or area made this viable. While I still hope I get additional input via my blog post, I am already running with some key… Continue

Class Wiki

I'm really feeling a lot of success with my 1st year French class wiki. There is growing evidence that they use the links and videos to do their homework. Students talk about the videos, and one student even sent me a new video link to add. My latest coup in bringing kids to web 2.0 technology has been with comic strip generators. I am so pleased with the positive response I've gotten from kids with comic strip generators that I'm on the lookout for new… Continue

Technology Savvy

I've been spending time this week with Kevin Honey . . . cutt and yes we've laughed, cried and learned much. I've come up with this prose to summarize my learning this week.

Google Sketch-Up where you can mock up
I've certainly caught on to the computer hold up
We can make movies with our green screen set up
My kids have enjoyed seeing Kevin crack up
Art Snacks really had the kids keyed up

Individual Response Devices

Today was a lot of fun. In the BIology classes, students took a quiz on the parts of cells and how they function. The quiz was conducted using individual response devices. (I use a set from TurningPoint http://www.turningtechnologies.com and am very pleased with them.) It was great to see how many students really comprehended the material. They enjoyed taking the quiz and asked when they could take the next quiz "Using clickers again!"

My 7th grade students also used the… Continue

What Do You Stand For?

(Cross Posted from my blog)

According to Robert Evans, the author of The Human Side of School Change, this is an essential question that all leaders must ask themselves. He

also suggests that a motto is much more effective than a lengthy

mission statement or a long list of goals or values. I've been thinking

about this a lot lately, trying to… Continue

Two Innovative High School Curriculums

In my pursuit of active learning examples I discovered four very innovative programs from Roger Shank that I wanted to share with you:

1. Scientific Reasoning Curriculum

The Scientific Reasoning Curriculum, the first in the VISTA four-year program, lays the groundwork for scientific thinking by presenting students with a series of challenges that require students to address problems with a systematic, scientific approach. In each project,…

Inspiring Creativity

This video is a wonderful look at Sir Ken Robinson, a visionary who sees children as I see them - only he was clever enough to express it in public!
