Project Proposal

April 20, 2009

I am planning to create a WebQuest for use in a seventh grade Social Studies class for my Design Project. The topic of the WebQuest will be a comparison of direct and representative democracy using example from ancient Athens, the Roman Republic and the United States. My vision for this project is that it will be carried out in a classroom of about 20 students of varying abilities with access to five classroom computers.… Continue

Design Project

After speaking with Dr. Shutkin I have decided to do my Design Project in the form of a WebQuest. I envision presenting this WebQuest to a classroom of 20 seventh grade Social Studies students, who have 5 classroom computers available to them. THey will be researching direct and representative democracy through examining Athens, Rome and the United States, as per the Standards. I will be incorporating Wagner's survival skills into the lesson and plan to capitalize on this year's election. I'm… Continue

My Fabulous Five

The five websites that I've chosen for my webpage are:

1) http://www.lingoz.com/en/

I included this websote for two of my students, who spend half of their day learning in a foreign language. I find that their parents are often not available to help them with their homework in this area, for a number of reasons. On days that I am not at their house I have a feeling their homework does not get done. This site gives them access to two-way translations and the option to submit… Continue

What They Want

I have only been able to ask one parent and one student what they would be looking for if I were to create a website for the students I tutor. The student, who was not feeling well, simply said, "I don't know". Even if she were feeling well, I'm not sure she would have given me much more input. Her mother, on the other hand gave me LOTS of input. To begin with, she told me that she would like to see pictures and tidbits about the other students I tutor. She said it would be interesting to see… Continue

Web 2.0 Apps?

The questions we are supposed to be answering are posed to us as though we are all teachers with classrooms full of students with similar assignments and needs (maybe not really needs, but for my purposes, just go with it). However, I am not yet a teacher with a classroom of my own, and therefore do not have classes in which students could be collaborating with one another on assignments I give, or anything of the like really. Instead I am a tutor to six individual students in different schools… Continue

WebLog 4

It's been a while since I read The Global Achievement Gap because I thought it was assigned for the first or second week of class, but that got changed. I do remember finding it interesting and agreeable. I read the Hybridization article last night, however. As I was reading it I had the desire to check out many of the sites cited and doodle around with them. However, I don't have the time to just mess around with non-essentials this semester. I'm so busy! I think it is an article I might refer… Continue

Semiotic Account of Multimodal Texts- Oh My!

First of all, my friend who works a CWRU was able to obtain Huey's book for me! Yea! Secondly, I have to say that this class has really sparked an awareness of all of the media and means of communication I have available to me. I have been taking more advantage of my phone (especially texting), chatting, online social networks, e-mail, blogs and You Tube (and the likes) than ever before. I figure I better if I want to be ready to teach in a year and a half! Also, I have found that all of this… Continue

Consider/Compare/Contrast/Critique/Question

To begin this blog I want to say that I have been looking for the article, The psychology and pedagogy of reading by E.B. Huey (1908). It was published in New York by Macmillan. I REALLY want to read this thing. Carmen Luke cites him as the first guy "to study reading research" and "the psychological effects of different patterns of manuscript layout and typeface". I am facsinated by this stuff. If anyone knows how to track this article down, I would be most grateful.

That's not the point… Continue
