I find that their parents are often not available to help them with their homework in this area, for a number of reasons. I have only been able to ask one parent and one student what they would be looking for if I were to create a website for the students I tutor. The student, who was not feeling well, simply said, "I don't know". Even if she were feeling well, I'm not sure she would have given me much more input. The questions we are supposed to be answering are posed to us as though we are all teachers with classrooms full of students with similar assignments and needs (maybe not really needs, but for my purposes, just go with it). However, I am not yet a teacher with a classroom of my own, and therefore do not have classes in which students could be collaborating with one another on assignments I give, or anything of the like really. It's been a while since I read The Global Achievement Gap because I thought it was assigned for the first or second week of class, but that got changed. First of all, my friend who works a CWRU was able to obtain Huey's book for me! Yea! Secondly, I have to say that this class has really sparked an awareness of all of the media and means of communication I have available to me. I have been taking more advantage of my phone (especially texting), chatting, online social networks, e-mail, blogs and You Tube (and the likes) than ever before. To begin this blog I want to say that I have been looking for the article, The psychology and pedagogy of reading by E.B. Huey (1908). It was published in New York by Macmillan. I REALLY want to read this thing. Carmen Luke cites him as the first guy "to study reading research" and "the psychological effects of different patterns of manuscript layout and typeface". I am facsinated by this stuff. If anyone knows how to track this article down, I would be most grateful.
