Let me begin by saying that I do not believe that the Common Core State Standards are an example of communism run amuck in the public school system.
If you do…I don’t blame you. It is all over the internet. But I dare say there are bigger reasons to be worried about public education. Common Core is not one of them. Here are three reasons why you should not be worried about the Common Core State Standards.
1. Common Core does not dictate the content of what is taught.
This is (and has been) controlled by your local school board or school district. If you have a problem with something your child is learning about, talk with your principal or child’s teacher. Most assuredly, it was not mandated by the Common Core State Standards.
Common Core State Standards define what students need to know; they do not dictate how teachers should teach or how students should learn. That decision is left to each state. Common Core does not dictate what lesson plans, programs, or textbooks teachers will use for curriculum.
