I read a forum about student networking and I shared the same concerns of safety, logistics, and collecting friends. It reminded me of a similar problem with a favorite science website – Ology . Students make choices, collect cards as they learn along the way, and create projects. Last year it quickly turned into a card collection contest. Many students did not get to the "create and submit a project part".
A couple of thoughts:
Build more accountability for students in regards to collecting projects. If the collecting cards (or friends) option cannot be blocked, it can be a motivator. I will limit the number of cards until certain stages are completed. Limit the number of total cards per project.
I will add web 2.0 components to build collaboration and communication among students.
eg. Use a wiki (or a network) to team up to find different solutions to problems or situations posed. Have partners collaborate via a wiki to create projects in Ology. Use a blog to report on group/partner progress and reflections.
