Social Networking Experiment for Middle School

I would like to experiment with using a social network for middle school language arts. Since I am in the early stages of this sort of thing, I welcome any tips and advice. Here are my preliminary thoughts:

1. Right now, I think that my biggest hurdle will be to sell the idea to my principal, the other LA teachers and parents.

2. I need to articulate a clear purpose for this project.

3. Of course, I will also need to figure out expectations and grading.

I'll add more ideas when they come to me.

You might want to check out imbee.com since it's a social network for kids 8-14 years old. I'm planning on using it with my 5th graders since it's pretty secure/private. The site also sends you an informational packet to send with your students in order to get parent permission. What I like, however, is everything you need to sell it is right there. I actually just forwarded the link to my principal and had him check it out. Like Durff said, a class blog is a good place to start and it's on there too.
