I encourage you to read the articles written by Suzanne Morse of the Pew Partnership for Civic Change. She's created an ACT NOW wiki that offers good advise for anyone who wants to see community problems solved. I contribute to this wiki because this provides good ideas for how businesses, churches, schools, etc. could be involved in helping volunteer based tutor/mentor programs grow in their own community.

Imagine what type of learning skills you might encourage if your students were reading the articles written by Suzanne and following the ACT NOW advise to set up a leadership program in your school that would connect people who need help with those who have the ability to help.

I encourage you to review the collaboration goals essay on the T/MC web site. Students in high school and college service learning programs from all parts of the world could take on this intermediary role.

Here's a presentation that illustrates a role that students and anyone in this forum could take to connect people they know with organizations working with at risk kids: http://www.tutormentorexchange.net/Partner/CC/Presentations/collaboration/collaboration_goals/collaboration_goals.htm

This was a pdf on my site until this summer when an intern from Hong Kong Baptist University converted it to a flash presentation.

This illustrates how students in high school and college could be using technology to communicate ideas that help others get involved in solving community problems.
