Over the past few years I have been reviewing various open source software applications. In the next series of blog’s I will share some of my findings which will include open source software applications for art, astronomy, computer science, games, internet, keyboarding, multimedia, and office. The first open source software application that I found important for those student’s who cannot afford to purchase expensive software and is easy to use is Open Office. Open Office is a multi-platform productivity suite. Open Office includes key desktop applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to other office suites. In fact you can open any Microsoft Office file while using Open Office. If you have any students who are unable to afford the expense of Microsoft Office software then tell them about Open Office. And just think it is legal. http://www.openoffice.org/

It's always exciting to find fellow educators that have discovered and are using Open Source software. In my case I work for the El Paso ISD in TX (I'm a former math teacher, now full time TIS) where I am a strong supporter of FLOSS. Please feel free to visit my Texas Open Source Software Foundation page (TOSSFoundation.org) or the blog http://toss-elptx.blogspot.com, where a more concentrated effort of software equivalence appears. I find fighting the Digital Divide envigorating, and welcome your efforts to spread this piece of the digital gospel.
