before we start using a chatroom....
the Basics
To utilize a chat room, the user types a message and then can immediately view responses from other chat room participants. Every chat room has its own set of rules and requirements. Some may require that you join the site by providing information. Your membership may need to be approved. The site may have restrictions on the type of language used and require participants stick to appropriate subjects.
Some chat rooms are moderated. In this case, someone is assigned to monitor the conversations and ensure that the rules are being followed. Not following the rules can get you kicked out of the conversation or banned from future use of the chat room.
Etiquette
When participating in a chat room it is important to remember that you are dealing with people, not just a computer or words on a screen. Following some simple etiquette rules will make the chat room experience better for everyone.
Introduce yourself when signing into the chat room. Most people will use a pseudonym for Internet safety reasons. Select a name that is not offensive. Also let people know when you are leaving the conversation.
Know the rules of the particular chat room and follow them. Don't take over the conversation with a completely new topic. Participate in the conversation presented or submit a new topic in a separate conversation. Do not use profanity.
Do not ask other members to provide personal information, such as a full name, birth date, address etc. This could be a security concern. Be wary of anyone who asks you for personal information.
Do not type in all capital letters. This is construed as yelling. Keep your messages short so other members can quickly read them. Check spelling prior to posting.
Do not attack someone if you disgree with what he is saying. This is called "flaming." Respond politely with your reasons for disagreeing. Do not get involved in someone else's tirade or inappropriate behavior. This can just perpetuate the situation.
Allow others to participate. Do not monopolize the conversation. Keep in mind that a delay in response may not mean you are not going to hear back on your comments. Some people are slower typists than others. Some prefer to think their entire response through prior to posting.
Do not do anything in the cyber world that you would not do in person. Keep your conversation polite, follow the rules and have fun.
