I understand that math is not always a students strong suit and may not always be the most interesting subject.  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of how to make a basic algebra lesson more engaging for students at the fifth grade level (ex. n-5=8).

Have you tried the Khan Academy?  Videos online for everything you can think of in math.  Heard about the flipped classroom?  Kids watch the Kahn video for homework and then come in the next day and problem solve.
