So I thought I had an advantage over my classmates in Cohort 1. I already had a masters. I would be able to get a certification and get a job faster than my classmates. Wrong!!!

School districts looking to save money any way they can, are filling the libraries with paraprofessionals or are using retired school librarians as subs. On top of this, you have schools churning out librarians as fast as they can. So to make myself more marketable, I am going for the whole shebang, the whole enchilada, the cherry on top....I am going to take the last 4 classes and get the second masters. I really hope this will help me in gaining employment as a school librarian. According to a friend of mine, already a librarian in my school district, said that there were over twenty applicants for every position. Yikes!!

My wonderful, ever patient husband, his only comment was "I thought you were just going to get a certification?" After explaining the situation, he just shrugged and said "OK"

My goal is to be done in the Spring of 2011. I have already taken the TeXes and passed. Here's to a great last 2 semesters at SHSU. Go BearKats!

Hello Susan,
I'm sorry to hear that things haven't "panned" out in the search for a librarian position. As a former member of Cohort #1, I thought you did have an advantage over the rest of us. Many of us went into the program hoping to be ready to fill positions because there was supposed to be a shortage of qualified librarians but we couldn't predict the budget cuts that would be occuring by the time we were ready. I have found that school librarian positions are suffering the same cuts here in Illinois. They don't require a masters here but you do need to be certified. Like you, I am hoping the MLS will open some doors. What I have noticed in the Chicago area is that there are a lot of public librarian positions open full and part-time with several being in the children to teen services. I'm considering the public librarian option for experience which I hope will help me when a public school librarian position opens. But things may change again when I am searching in the spring. By the way Chicago is great! We live in a lovely area and the summer weather is so much cooler than Texas. We are going into Fall and the leaves are changing, the highs are in the 70's and lows in the 50's. I'm looking forward to the change in seasons! Congrats on passing the TeXes!!!!

I have a strong prejudice in favor of people getting the 2nd MLS...otherwise they don't get to have LS 591, my favorite class!
