Core Learning Principle #4: Faculty are the Directors of the Learning Experience
The role of faculty has changed with the use of technology. The Instructor is no longer the only person considered to have the knowledge necessary for the students to learn. The instructor is the guide who is responsible for getting the students to work on their own. Students assume a greater role in their learning environment by moderating discussions, giving presentations, writing summaries and reflecting on what they are learning.
The cooperation of faculty members involved in designing online classes is crucial. Online class design requires not only the input of one instructor, but a variety of instructors. Members of the faculty are required to work as a team in order to produce a class with quality that involves the learners and their input.
The advantage of technology is that this work can be done anywhere and anytime. The faculty members do not have to be physically present. Having a team of instructors working together allows individual instructors to have more time to mentor the students and their learning and less time on “administrative
and technical issues”.

I would like to ask a few questions for those of you who teach online. Do you design your classes or is there a group of faculty members who help you design your classes? Do you teach classes that have been designed by others? What problems have you encountered when you were working with a group of faculty members in designing an online class? I look forward to hearing from you.
