Hands on learning

I am looking for research on the benefits of active or hands on learning. Can anyone point me to some? I am needing to define hands on learning, show the benefits in the classroom, how it is best incorporated, how it can keep students engaged, examples in schools, and how it can be integrated into the current classroom settings.
