I have spent the last few days reading about how we need to re- define instruction for the 21st century. I think the better question is, how do we learn in the 21st century? Today, it is not about how teachers teach and students process that information. It is about how each of us receives that information and what is done with the information received. We are no longer passive recipients of information that is handed down from the experts but actively involved in creating the information.
People from all over the world are connected in ways that were never conceived just a decade ago. No longer will governments be able to isolate themselves from the rest of the world. Students are connected globally through social networks that forge intellectual and emotional relationships. Children are finding their own identity in relation to others, not just by proximity, but globally. I believe the way we receive and distribute information is changing . Before we can re-define instruction we need to look at how we access information and what we learn by creating content for a larger community outside the classroom and without the direction from a teacher.
