Living in the Question

Was there ever a time when there were no questions? A time before curiosity was born, when the ‘need to know’ was not yet hatched in the minds of men and women? A time before science sought knowledge and even before philosophers wondered about the nature of knowing? If there was such a time it would have been an age of innocence and contentment, and probably an innate awareness that all is as it should be … all is well… all the time …everywhere. Somewhere out of the possibilities of that time, probably out of the first discontentment, the first question was born. 의문이 없었던 시대가 과연 한번이라도 있었을까? 호기심이란 게 생기기 이전, “알아야 할 필요성”이 아직 사람들 마음에 싹트기 전의 시절이? 과학이 지식을 추구하기 전, 안다는 것의 본질에 대한 궁금증조차 철학자들이 품기 전인 그런 때가? 만일 그런 때가 있었다면 그것은 천진난만하고 충족된 상태였던 시대, 아마도 모든 것이… 언제나… 어디서나… 다 좋은 것이 틀림없고 실제로도 모두 좋다는 인식을 지닌 채 태어나 살던 시대였을 게다. 그 시대의 가능성의 범주 어디선가, 아마도 최초의 불만족에서 최초의 의문이 잉태되었을 것이다.

Whoever invented the idea of ‘the question’ was obviously admitting the presence of some form of ignorance on some level about something or someone or some event. Curiosity is the mark of a certain kind of ignorance. Not in a negative sense, but in the sense there is something incomplete in ones awareness, something is missing. Asking who, what, why, where, when and how would eventually become the way to attempt to dispel any ignorance about anything in time and space. Asking the right questions in the right sequence in the right way at the right time would become its own art form, a skill learned only with experience, trial and error, success and failure with many surprises along the way! “의문”이라는 개념을 처음 발명해낸 사람이 누구였든 그는 무언가, 누군가, 혹은 어떤 일에 대해서 어떤 수준과 어떤 형태로든 무지가 있다는 사실을 명백하게 인정한 셈이다. 호기심은 어떤 특정한 종류의 무지를 나타내는 표시다. 부정적 의미에서가 아니라, 그 사람의 인식 속에 무언가 빠진 것, 무언가 불완전한 게 있다는 의미다. 누가, 무엇을, 왜, 어디서, 언제, 어떻게 등 6하 원칙에 따라 착실히 캐고 들어가보는 방법이 결국은 시간과 공간 속의 그 무언가에 대한 무지를 없애는 시도일 것이다. 올바른 때 올바른 방법으로 올바른 순서에 따라 올바른 질문을 던지는 그 자체가 한 가지 형태의 예술이며, 오직 경험과 시행착오, 성공과 실패를 거침으로써만 배울 수 있는 기술아며, 그 과정에서 여러 가지 놀라운 일들도 겪게 될 것이다.
