I am looking for some advise on how to engage my grade one students in some form of new (non traditional) form of literacy. I am thinking about podcasting and blogging, but I have never tried either before. Any suggestions as to how I can keep it simple for both myself and my 7 year old students?

Have you considered VoiceThread? It is a very simple program to use. You can use traditional literacy practices (read a book aloud) and have students respond electronically. Students can describe, mark favorite parts, identify beginning, middle and end, etc. This allows students to see a blend between traditional and new (digital literacies) You could do it whole class with a white board/computer or have parents help by using the phone to upload comments.

Thanks for the suggestion Anne. I haven't even heard of that program before. It is something I can access from the internet or do I purchase it? It sounds really interesting!
