Portfolio Project 2: Vocabulary
I do not have a first-year English textbook, but I imagine that names of places around a town can be a vocabulary cluster. The following is a mini lesson plan about places in a town.
Level: Novice
Lesson Length: 45 minutes
Objectives:
- This lesson serves vocabulary and reading purposes.
- At the end of the lesson, the student will be:
- Be able to identify city places in text and picture form
- Be able to name town places verbally
Materials:
- Picture of the city made for vocabulary learning
- Flashcards (build own city)
- Audio Tapes
- Reading worksheet
Vocabulary items:

- Airport
- Restaurant
- Bookstore
- Hotel
- Cinema
- Post Office
- Bank
- Police Station
- Beach
- Fire Station
- School
- Swimming Pool
- Bakery

Activities:
- Activity 1: Intro to the vocabulary
- Look at the picture of the town together, name them together, repeat after the teacher, write in the vocabulary word next to the picture (mimic from teacher who writes it on the overhead)
- Activity 2: Practice with Vocabulary
- Build Our Own City
- The teacher will drill students with flashcards then the whole class will draw and make a city from the flashcards on the board.
- Activity 3: Reading Worksheet and Audio Recordings
- Students will read about each person’s day and match the words with the picture of each scenario.
- The students will then have a listening activity that goes along with the worksheet. Students will listen to each person on the tape and number where each person goes first in order of their day.
- Activity 4: Cool Down Activity
- We will go over the flashcards one more time, then students will get in pairs and play hangman with the new vocabulary.
