I'm borrowing an idea from Scott Filkins as posted on the NCTE blog site. He writes,

"Every school year, I amass an impressive pile of books for my own summer reading... Always more than I can realistically read in a single season, this collection represents the mythic promise of never-ending summer, abundant with time to relax and recharge.

As I look back on my annual ritual, I realize that I never plan the same way for writing."

I have found myself thinking about my own writing more and more. Two years ago I made a commitment to become a writer. I figured that since I felt so strongly that reading teachers NEED to be readers (see this blog post) I should also feel strongly that writing teachers should be writers.

So, now I write in my own composition notebook whenever I get the chance during Writer's Workshop and I try to add to this blog occasionally. But Scott got me thinking, I have a HUGE summer reading list, but I haven't even considered a writing list until now. What should be on that list? And just like my reading list has professional reading and personal reading, shouldn't I have professional writing and personal writing?

SO...
Here's a START on my "Summer Writing List." These are NOT in any kind of order, just me brainstorming what I could write about for the next few weeks. Go ahead and feel free to give me some more ideas!

Professional Writing:
Why teachers should blog! ;-)
Anchor Lessons
Building relationships with students
Assessments
Reviews of professional books
Reviews of blogs
The importance of building a PLN

Personal Writing
My kids
Memories of my mother
Reflections from daily devotional time
Questions I would ask God
Shopping!
Memories of high school
Recipes
Living on a farm

Now, what's on YOUR writing list?

Now I'm looking at this list a month later and realizing I don't like it at all.

Insight?
Give kids opportunities to create new lists/brainstorm/THINK/free write as often as possible.
