From the articles and videos I recently read and watched for my class on Classrooms for the Digital Age, several realizations came to me about what it means to teach in the digital age. My students are digital natives and while I would like to think of myself as technologically savvy, I am a digital immigrant and they will always know more than me about the newest ways to use the internet for their benefit. The way school is currently designed does not fit in with the way our students' lives need it to. They need to be taught to explore information and discover their own ways to solve problems and create meaning, not find answers to questions we give them or memorize information the state wants them to know for the test at the end of the year. What we as educators need to do is not integrate more technology (they already know how to use it) we need to teach them how to utilize it for the job world they will be entering when they leave school. They know how to find information, we need to teach them how to want to find information. Most of our students are just going through the motions of school, doing what they are asked in order to get by, but what the real world needs is for them to be passionate about learning and acquiring information and be able to communicate that passion competently and in a variety of ways. All of this will require a huge shift in how schools operate and how teachers teach. Quite frankly, this is a scary thought, but I am more than willing to do all I can to step outside the box and try to start this shift in my own classroom.
