Yesterday, as I walked 200 students down a 50-yard stretch of concrete in the cold downpour of rain, I had and epiphany! There are some things that an assistant principal should always have in his/her office. I am sharing these "must-haves" with you now, so that you might walk in the rain in comfort!
Things an Assistant Principal MUST have
#1 Please have a raincoat with a hood in your office. It should zip shut. Also, it must cover your entire self...including your bottom. If you are like me, and only have a winter coat, then you might spend the rest of your staff meeting with a wonderful heart-shaped wet spot on your behind. It's unattractive.
#2 It's a good idea to have a sturdy umbrella. The cheaper the umbrella, the more likely it is to allow water to seap through it's flimsly lining.
#3 Rain boots are a need. Trust me wet, cold, stinky socks is not the impression you want to leave upon your Site Council.
#4 Assistant Principal's need a hairbrush, toothbrush, and makeup (if you are a female). As the mascara dripped from my eyelashes and my hair dripped on the kids around me, I began to understand why the mother in the parking lot was looking at me strangely. I looked like a swamp monster in a wool coat with a heart-shaped wet spot on my butt.
#5 Finally, an A.P. must have a good attitude. Despite the wetness, an A.P.'s job is never done. Even if you're miserable, you have to smile and carry on!
