At 8:18am on November 3, 2008, Daniel Bassill said…: Hi Aurelio, I hope you'll take a look at the maps and articles posted here and here and encourage PTA leaders in big cities around the country to adopt marketing strategies intended to draw volunteers and extended learning into high poverty areas, via non-school, volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs.

I'm from Chicago, and create these maps from a non profit organization I lead, called the Tutor/Mentor Connection. The maps are just part of a range of actions intended to build private sector involvement in the education and career development of economically disadvantaged kids. By recruiting volunteers from diverse work backgrounds, and connecting these programs with the workplace, this becomes a diversity strategy, not just education, or social and emotional supports.
