No, never did end up using Twitter in the classroom as it was blocked. I still think it would be a great way to get kids to use their Chinese, but it takes time to set up the network around it that really makes it valuable, and seeing as we couldn't get to it anyway, I let it go this time. I'm embarking on a project next Term using mobile phones in the classroom with Year 8. Hopefully the gods are smiling on me, knowing how 'lovely' Year 8 can be. Oh well, nothing like a bit of a challenge :-)
