I have 2 daughters and 1 fat cat. I teach 9th grade biology at a school for Hawaiian children. Next year my school is rolling out a program called "1:1" which means that every student will be given a laptop computer. I've joined this forum to learn as much as I can to keep ahead of my students.

I am a graduate student at California State University Fresno. I am looking for anyone who might know of a middle school or schools who would like to participate in my master's research project. I am trying to determine how much time middle school students (6th-8th graders) spend on line using social networking sites and on-line collaborative web sites to discuss academic content. I am looking for 1:1 laptop students and also students who do not use laptops in their classrooms. I need the following: school name, contact name and e-mail address. Thanks!
With your interest in Education Technology, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. By the way I graduated from Saint Louis School in 1985. I had quite a few friends go to Kamehameha.
Hi Deborah! Hope you're enjoying the winter break. I was wondering if you, your educator contacts or students would be interested in participating in a Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. We'd really like to get Hawaii students involved. Please let me know. Thanks!
Hi Deborah. I am the Cmap lady in the discussion thread you posted on. I just wanted to say a quick hello and welcome to Classroom 2.0.
With your kids getting a laptop, another tool you may find helpful is Elluminate. You can run open office hours and give extra help to struggling kids, meet with parents, hold special topic workshops, and more out of your own online classroom. I teach classes from mine and find I use it for more than just my classes. It is a great place to meet with people that a telephone conversation or e-mail would just be too cumbersome for such as when someone has a software related question or how to solve a particular math problem. It is like being right there beside them in the same room.
Their three-seater room is free. Let me know if you are interested in taking a tour of mine and see what it can do. I think you will enjoy in.No, I don't work for Elluminate, hehehehe. I am just a big fan of their online classroom.
