About Me
I have been a teacher for 36 years; I've used personal computers in my classroom since 1980 and I currently help faculty in the College of Medicine to move to a more student centered approach.

Active Learning in Web2

I am interested in creating environments where students can actively engage with the course content and each other. I have a toolbox for doing this in the classroom, see http://blogs.usask.ca/medical_education/archive/2007/04/using_active_le.html for some of these. I'm uncomfortable about the overemphasis on text in many online environments.

I have a wiki about tools for teaching and would love suggestions for tools I might add http://wiki.usask.ca/db/index.php/Technology_Tools

Demise of the Active Learning Blog Carnival

Posted on June 15, 2009 at 11:26am 0 Comments

The June carnival includes some ideas about using Dr. Michael Wesch's approach to curriculum development in K-12.

I regret to inform everyone that the last edition of the Active Learning Blog Carnival has been posted. I began the carnival to promote Educational Blogging and there are so many blogs available today that that purpose no longer makes sense. Thanks to everyone who contributed articles over the years.

Dr. Michio Kaku agreed to do a free webinar for both teachers and students at noon EST on December 17th

Dr. Michio Kaku agreed to do a free webinar for both teachers and students at noon EST on December 17th. It's intended for teachers to share with students and Michio is a great speaker to get people excited about science given how he relates complex subjects to what they see on TV and in movies, I think there's be a ton of classes that'd be interested in it. The registration link is at http://tinyurl.com/michiokaku or you can read more about him at… Continue

What did you learn on your school holidays?

This month's Active Learning Carnival asks "What did you learn on your school holidays?"

I've been thinking about the effects of organized, indoor activities replacing children's outdoor play because of an ad on my television for summer school and because of a presentation I attended on increasing childhood obesity. What do you think?

Hi Ted -- I'd like to invite you to join a Classroom 2.0 group called Canadians Mashup. I'm trying to build a network of Canadian educators and bloggers. No discussions yet. I'm just starting out by trying to find where everyone lives and what they teach. If you're interested, please add me as a colleague as well.

If you add yourself to the map, please include a name or a photo of some sort. There seem to be a lot of unidentified people from unidentified places and the map is getting stuck on for some reason. The problem is that I can't tell from the members’ list which anonymous hits are real people and which were just false starts. The company does not differentiate members unless there is a picture or a name. Location only is not enough to help me know which entries are not real ones. THANKS!!!!

Just looked at your active learning site - great examples. My grade 4 kids are doing many similar things with blogs, wikis, video and lots of project based learning. It's amazing how fast these technologies are finding their way into little kid classrooms!

Your wiki is very nicely done...informative, simple, and to the point. Thanks for a great resource!

By the way...the website you gave is very interesting. You know, they don't teach Canadian history here in the states. When I met my husband, I didn't know where Saskatchuwan was! Sorry if I spelled that wrong! :)

Hi Deidre,

Lovely to meet you and greetings from Australia. You will be looking forward to summer and winter is coming here. We have had a terrible drought and will really welcome any rain that falls this winter. I love this Board; everyone is so friendly, but am still finding my way around
