I was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where I grew up and attended the University of Alabama before moving with my husband to Mississippi State University, where I earned an M.B.A. and joined the Air Force. I served 10 years as a logistician, then moved to Richmond, Virginia. I began using my G.I. Bill benefits to work on a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at Virginia Commonwealth University. My thesis was a collection of 14 short stories called "Tracks from Tuscaloosa." Following graduation I began working on a teaching certificate in English, which I earned in 2000. For several years I taught both community college and preschool. Three years ago I began substituting in Goochland County, and was hired as an English teacher in 2007. I'm in my third year of teaching at Goochland Middle School, which I love. My greatest joy is helping the students discover their passions. I try to provide them with exposure to as many different things as I can while teaching them about reading and writing. Because I am a writer myself, I enjoy sharing the highs and lows of the craft. I like to learn along with my students. It is very gratifying to watch them grow and change during the school year.
