About Me
I'm a physics teacher from New Zealand and an ethusiastic user of social networking sites in RL. I'd like to think that there are a myriad of ways to integrate these tools into creative and innovative teaching.

Widgets

Posted on December 11, 2008 at 4:07pm 0 Comments

I'm just playing with a site for making widgets. I think it's pretty interesting, but last night when I went to bed I dreamed about it, imagining that I had made a widget that was actually a mini twist-a-plot book, and you clicked and made decisions all the way through, and I had conditional programming in it. Conditional programming. I haven't thought of that in years.

So, I'm wondering what my kids could do with it. We could maybe make widgets of their work in science, and… Continue

Title aside, I'm just wrapping up administrivia for the teaching year. I am awash in a sea of paper. It's all over my desk, littering my other desk, stacked on my equipment table, scattered over the lab benches, stuffed into envelopes and piled high in file boxes. I feel like we should have a pulp and paper mill at the back of the playing fields, just to keep the school supplied with forms and test papers and timetables and calendar dates and process reminders and leaving forms and testimonial… Continue

Thinking about the Digital Youth Project

Posted on November 24, 2008 at 4:49pm 0 Comments

I have the pdf open and I'm wading through it and thinking about the presentation on my experience in using web2.0 technologies in the classroom. It's really interesting, and I am totally getting my geek on just thinking about all the cool stuff. I am just getting resources together right now - and am about to investigate a site that says it records your bibliography online so you don't have to do it the hard way. Sounds great to me.

I also have a classroom full of emo kids,… Continue

Hi Gwyneth,

With your work in online education I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom. Since you teach physics it has all kinds of features like a virtual white board and a content manager you can upload ppts and other MS applications.

I thought I'd try it out. I haven't networked much with other teachers online as myself. In fact, I rarely interact with other people online as my meatspace self so this is a bit of an experiment.

I'll have to check that one out - thanks! I'm trying to set up a sort of internal ("safe") version of Newsvine.com in the unit too.

Hey there,

For the media unit there are two formal assessment items - an oral where students have to present their analysis of two news articles to the class. This will probably constitute 30 very similar looking powerpoints...am still thinking over the options here (which will still be inline with our assessment policies) and the other is to analyse an unseen news article and write an essay under exam conditions.

It's frustrating how outdated our assessment methods seem to be! Would love to do some sort of annotated StumbleUpon or Delicious as part of their assessment, or capzles...ahh the possibilities.

Found this post today on the Students20 blog - Teaching Brevity, an interesting advocacy for a different approach to our classrooms.
