Kozol's Letters to a Young Teacher

"The problem in too many schools is not in the idea of an objective in itself but in the fierce relentlessness with which pursuit of that objective is enforced and in the disturbing fact that teachers seldom get to school their own objectives since these are, in large part, dictated by the state."

Just a quote to get some thinking about the word "learning objectives." Am I necessarily in control of the objectives I teach...and in all honesty, do I know what objectives to teach without the state standards in front of me. Far too often we rely on some greater entity to dictate the progression of skills, which in turns then makes me feel as though our teacher training programs are not necessarily equipping us with the tools we need to be the professionals we strive to be labeled as. However, training must then be longer than the sparse one to two years. Yet again, can our current school system function in this way?

There need to be standards because public education is a public good that the public pays for, so the public gets to say (through the governance procedures in our democratic republic - voting, representatives, checks and balances, free press, etc.) what an educated person is. Systems have to have goals. I don't think an individual teacher knows enough about the entire system to set the goals. But our expertise should be in how to accomplish those goals.

Hello. I was wondering if you have students or educator contacts who would be interested in participating in a nationwide SAT Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!
