Some are so full of widgets and lists it's hard to find the actual student writing. I'm blessed with a former student's dad who designed (and serves) the blog using Drupal. It's open source but certainly a much steeper learning curve than something like edublogs (which I find is horribly slow and now they have some funky advertizing things going on). It is amazing easy for me to administer and so safe that with the current setting allows NO untoward messages. .
