Teaching in the Digital Age
Today’s students have grown up having a variety of technology as part of their everyday lives. As part of the D-gen, they learn and communicate differently than past generations and far more frequently. Time spent in a traditional classroom is no longer the best learning environment for the new generation of students. The new generation termed Digital Natives by Marc Prensky is a group of multitasking, technology savvy people who have grown up with technology from day one. Those who are not Digital Natives, but are trying to become acquainted with the Digital Age are termed Digital Immigrants by Prensky. The accent a Digital Immigrant has as described by Prensky was interesting, and after reading the article the accent will probably stand out more when I hear it. I do not believe that I have an accent. The information I read and videos I viewed reinforce the idea of my needing to incorporate more technology into my classroom, not only in lesson format, but in planning, development, presenting, and sharing. Web 2.0 can bring teachers together in lesson planning in a brand new way. I consider my self more of a Digital Native than a Digital Immigrant. While the technology was not instantly available from my birth, I have embraced the new technologies as they have been introduced to me. I am more comfortable composing documents on the computer rather than on paper, and along with using a computer and the internet, I text, blog, listen to music, television, movies, and podcasts on my ipod, create webpages and wikis, and try to incorporate much of this into my classroom.
