I've taught on the elementary level for 20 years and am thought of as our building's "computer guy". Though, I know enough to know that I don't know much.

Mapping 2.0 Sites?

Posted on June 25, 2007 at 6:12pm 2 Comments

Hi,
I'm interested in working with a 2.o application that will allow me to mark historical and geographical sites on a map, that will provide GPS coordinates, and allow some space for text and possibly a picture. I'd like to be able to save maps, put them onto another website or link to them and to paste them into Word so they can be printed. Can anyone steer to a site that will do all of this?

Thanks,
Richard

Are There Other Elementary Teachers Here?

Posted on May 1, 2007 at 9:56am 9 Comments

Hi,
I'm looking for other Elementary school classroom teachers who use or would like to use Web 2.0 applications in their classrooms. Maybe we can hook up, make each other "friends" and have more focused discussions about our specialized interests and concerns.

Friends?

Hi,
First of all I'd like to thank so many people for asking to be added as friends. I'm totally new to this stuff though. I don't know what the purpose of friends is or why someone would request to be added as a friend or what the purpose of the friend's function of blogs is. Would anyone mind explaining? I'll invite you out for a virtual beer.

Thanks,
Richard

Book Report Project

Posted on April 23, 2007 at 3:00pm 4 Comments

I have an idea to have fourth graders do book reports on-line. I have little experience with 2.O stuff and would like some input about which would be a more appropriate format: a wiki, in which kids would change the book report about a book they've read; or a blog, in which kids would add their comments to the book reports of other students. What do you think? Or maybe you have a completely different suggestion?
Thanks,
Richard

Huh?

I've never used a blog or any on-line kind of journal and have never really gotten what the point of them is. I'm testing this out just to see if it will give me any ideas for what I might actually use it for.

Hi Richard. I was wondering if you have educator friends who would be interested in participating in a nationwide SAT Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!

Hi Richard,

With your interest in Ed Tech for your elemanry kids, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service.

I love your comment that you "know enough to know that you don't know much". I'm in the same boat. I'm the one everyone looks too, and yet I'm constantly trying to learn it all myself. Looking forward to participating in the Elem Sch 2.0 group!

Hi
I am hoping that elementary is what we call primary in the uk - because that's what I am. I teach in a tiny school and my class are aged 7 - 11 yrs old, though the school takes children from age 3.
Would love to know more about how everyone uses technology at this age-group. Can I join? Jo

Thanks for the contact Richard. I enjoy teaching technology and realize some places do not have tech teachers. However, I see my role as much more than a teacher for students, but a guiding partner is technology integration for classroom teachers. I was a classroom teacher and see this combination as something we all can learn from with the students ultimately benefiting. As for the moment, I am still learning my way around Web 2.0 as it is called.
