About Me
I am an arts educator, storyteller and writer, currently working on my PhD at Claremont Graduate University, California. Almost done with coursework. My focus in my doctoral studies has been on what we mean by good or effective teaching and learning. I believe that the arts should be a core aspect of curricula in schools, not just in themselves but as a way of learning and perceiving. I also believe the arts offer wonderful opportunities and media through which we can develop just the kinds of leadership mindsets and skills teachers need to be effective and transformative in their work with students.

REAL Learning stands for
Reflective
Engaged
Authentic
Life-Long

this is the kind of learning I believe sticks. Some people call it deep learning, learning for life, a good education. The things we learned that we never have forgotten were learned in this way. This is the kind of learning we hope to engage our students in so that learning becomes more than passing exams, getting through the next hurdle, and more about exploring the world and equipping ourselves to be happy and fulfilled. It is the job of schools to provide a safe and rich environment for REAL learning, and the role of teachers to lead children in growing and developing in holistic ways.

The REAL Learning network that I have started is an invitation for teachers and artists to share ideas and their beliefs and experiences about REAL Learning. Please do visit the site and add your stories, ideas, comments and photos.

Hi, Shamini! I've not been using drama yet, but I'm planning to with my kindergartners. Our school is going to become an arts magnet next year, and I was thinking that to get into storytelling with my ESL students is I would have them act out stories then help me "write" them...
