If you'll send me your email address and I'll invite you in to a couple of documents in Google. One lines out our idea of what school should and should not be. The second is much more specific, listing "project seeds" and outlining the business model we'll be using.

I think last year, my kids did about 2-4 projects per class per quarter. They also had independent work they had to do; literature circles, independent reading, foreign language, grammar packets (to either shore up problem areas, or to move them ahead), vocabulary/spelling units (depending on abilities), independent interest projects.

They had to complete each of those independent projects each quarter in addition to their SS, Sci, and Math work/projects. This year, I think I'm going to scale back on the # of projects to deepen the learning in each project. I was learning curriculum, as well as how to teach multiple topics to multiple ages. *whew*

This year I have my feet a bit more under me, and will be jumping headlong with the kids into a more business-model of education (PLEASE ask me about this!), as well as going deeper into each project. The 1.5 hour-long classes just weren't enought for my 5-8th graders and they seemed to be juggling too many projects to really delve into any of them too deeply. This year, they'll have longer periods to work on 1 or 2 projects at a time (in addition to the independent expectations).
