I have a large group of 5th/6th graders that are doing research on the college they like best or the career that interests them the most. I am looking for some good resources for them to use - expecially video conferences where they could interview people through Skype or Video Conference IP Unit. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions that could help me?

Thanks,

Jorge

I guess it’s hard to get people to randomly answer questions about their employment on skype. But you could ask your local college for some help to give you some promotional hand-outs about their courses. You should also ask your students what spheres they are interested in and then turn to these industries for help. As for hospitality jobs, for example, you can ask hotel managers in your neighborhood to help you out and share their stories with your students. Btw, choosing to tell them about hospitality jobs is forward-looking as this industry is a fast-developing one. Many hotels are looking for specialists not only with practical skills but also an academic degree. So it would be useful for your students to get some info on this career path opportunity. You can also look for promotional videos on YouTube or on colleges’ websites. I like Les Roches Chicago hospitality school video as it’s students who share their experiences in it and there are also some reviews from graduates on their website.

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. Let me know how it goes. I would love to hear how others adapt & use this idea. I might just try this idea out in the 5th/6th graders for our research project.
Some Tips-
1. First students have to be exposed to the wide range of careers available to them.
2. Once students have viewed a variety of career videos, ask them to research a career that interests them.
3. Interview a person in this profession. Students should use the questions they generated during their research to interview a person in their chosen career.
4. Observe for a day.
