Space: The Online Multimedia Student Journal

If you are interested in thinking about how Web 2.0 can become a publishing platform for students exploring multimedia, writing, photography, moviemaking and more, then consider spending a few minutes at Space.

The second edition of Space has just been released and students submitted work via the YouthTwitter network. Space is the brainchild of George Mayo and his students, who were also one of the forces behind the Many Voices for Darfur blogging project. George and his students used Google Docs for the first edition and then Google Page Creator for the second edition, and another group of students may be using a Wiki for the third edition later this year. This is true exploration of ways to publish for a real audience in an authentic way.

What is most interesting is that the online platform provides room for a different level of creativity by students. My own students, for example, submitted stop-motion animation movies and hyperlinked poetry projects. In the past edition, my kids were writing and sharing short stories.
