We posted a discussion earlier about Skype in the classroom, and we did not seem to get a good responce to it and we are wondering if there has been any movements with Skype in education.

Also if anyone would like to Skype with our school we are open to ideas from anyone, keeping it on education ofcoarse.

Dear Todd
I've also registered my class on Mixxer. It's a great community. Depending on the combination of languages you will be successful. With the combination English - German it gets a little bit more difficult. Anyway, I was wondering how you organized the online exchange. How many students worked online at the same time? Were they all in the same room? How about the bandwidth and the firewall?
I have posted elementary lessons on this wiki around Skype, other web tools, and an award winning children's book. Many are not sure what to talk about on video conferences that incorporates core educational skills. These lessons integrate tech tools with reading, writing, and speaking.

My third grade classes will be involved in many of these activities. We welcome others wanting to have discussions via Skype too.

I do a daily TV show with my middle school students and we have used Skype to do live remote interviews from Japan and other locations. Last year we did a presentation Skype in education. Take a look at the page I set up at http://www.wyckoffschools.org/eisenhower/etv/interviews/index.html

I am very interested in setting up more interviews. Our daily live show starts at 8:00 am EST but we have recorded some interviews and aired them later.
Tom,
I added your skype linked webpage to the homepage of my Edu-Skyper's Phonebook: a registery of educators who want to connect their classrooms - http://skypeintheclassroom.wordpress.com

Skype is an excellent learning tool. I've used it for teaching English to a student in Brazil. I actually met my student only later when I visited Brazil. However, these days I'm more interested in looking at conferencing systems for synchronous learning environments that integrate with some type of LMS (Learning Management System).
Wiziq.com looks interesting. I think an LMS will allow for a richer learning environment which can persist content created and consumed by students. It's nice to not have to use one interface for conferencing (e.g. skype) and another interface for content persistence (e.g. wiki or moodle). Skype is good for its ubiquity and it's nice to have direct access to a student network when others are online.

Unfortunately, skype has done away with skypecasts which had some ability to moderate a conference and allow people to promote themselves to a level to ask questions. Audio/video in synchronous learning environments, in my opinion, is best done with software that has some kind of moderation ability in one-to-many learning environments. But Skype gets all As for its video/audio call quality especially on computers with dual core processors.

Jason,
how about vRoom by Elluminate? It's free, hosted and you get all the features to moderate.
Hi - I addded this to Allen Martin's similar request in Classroom 2.0 --- For the last 3 years, I've used skype, sightspeed, or polycom. We have a video conferences at least once per week in the classroom for class to class meetings, sharing, etc. The best lessons are those that fit what the teacher has in mind already, what he/she may be planning to teach - modify and adapt it for sharing, kid presentations and so forth. That's how I do it. I keep a project based classroom feel in most everything we do, so video fits right in. We used skype this year to help us all adjust to a new student who spoke only Spanish - connected with a teacher in Los Angeles for basic translations, helped the kids get to know the new student much more quickly. There's a short video on my classroom 2.0 page showing the LA conference.
