Our district is under new leadership and we are going through the strategic planning process for facilities and technology as well as several other areas. I currently serve 5 large elementary schools and one area that is lacking is providing teachers with the necessary support to really embed technology to meet the needs of our students and support how they learn. One of the questions we are seeking to answer is: "Can we staff an integrated technology-support staff person to aid teachers in planning and instruction? " I was curious what this looks in other districts as far as the number of instructional technology positions per building/students and how their position/job description is defined?

I work in a fairly typical district in Utah. We have 37 schools and 26,000 students. We currently only have 3 full time technology curriculum specialists to cover the district, of which I am one. We focus on staff development in technology, showing teachers how to use document cameras and Moodle and the like. We also have technology support to handle computer and network problems, with 1 person per 3 secondary schools or 8 elementary schools. In the elementary schools they have instructional coaches, each handles two schools. These coaches are heavy on literacy, but the goal is to get them tech-savvy enough to assist us in that area in the future. The goal is eventually to have a teacher on staff at each secondary school with half of their day devoted to teaching and the other half technology curriculum support.
