I need your input about Reading Specialists and Literacy Coaches. My district places Reading Specialists in the classroom as regular classroom teachers, and Literacy Coaches in charge of basically overseeing all classrooms. Is this the proper use for these personnel? What do your districts do?

Literacy Coaches replaced Reading Specialists this year in my District. These individuals are responsible for organizing state testing, implementing Learning Focused Strategies, coaching and mentoring teachers. In years past, the role of the Reading Specialist varied from school to school. Some had reading groups and others managed classes and paperwork related to the reading program.
Thanks for the information, Jeanne. This appears to be happening in my district this year, also. I was just wondering if it was a universal switch.
I believe it has something to do with wording in the NCLB act and the stimulus package money.
