I am beginning a unit for my 5th grade talented and gifted students where they will be dissecting an owl pellet and constructing the bones back together and all that good stuff. I don't just want to dive right into the owl pellet as I think it is important for them to gain an understanding of the bird. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about some introductory lessons or ideas to get them started. I was thinking of breaking them into different categories such as types of owls in Iowa(where we live), parts of the body, what owls eat, the habitat, etc. and having them create a wiki to share their information, but I feel like this is not quite as high level as I want to take them. Any help would be great!
Thanks
