Has anyone tried to track Greg Mortenson's travels using Google Earth or Maps while reading Three Cups of Tea? I am going to try this with my 6th graders but was looking for advice to make sure it goes smoothly.

Thanks!

Ian, we are using the Young Readers Edition. I guess that is the 'teen' version you are referring to. We also have the picture book.

Do you donate through Pennies for Peace?

I have not actually completed this activity. However, I know that students really enjoy using Google Earth. My one suggestion would be to not just have students track his travels but also have them create markers explaining what he does in different sites. Consider also using the path function to have students directly right on the Google Earth layer.

Andy, thanks for the tip. Actually, that is exactly what Google Lit Trips suggest. My question is how would you organize assigning students to collect information? by chapter? by place? by character? all of the above? I've never done this before. I'm trying to think of how to orchestrate this because they can't all upload their info at the same time...have you done this before?

How are things coming along for this project? Have you started or are you starting later this year? I would not mind maybe creating some sort of online collaboration project with you and your students. We could have online discussions and both raise money for Pennies for Peace. I think we have a lot of possibilities. Let me know if interested.
Hi Aaron, we have finished reading the book and completing related activities. The students are continuing to collect pennies and will share their Three Cups of Tea video with the rest of the school at the end of the month, which encourages them to get involved by collecting pennies. There will also be another 'push' to collect pennies in April. If you are at a point where you would want to compare collections or have the student communicate in some way, please let me know. Thanks!
I am teaching this book this year as well, and I was trying to use videoconferencing in the lesson plan. We have H.323 capability and I was wondering if there is anyone who would like to be a part of this. Thanks! Email me at amanda.mcintosh@trussvillecityschools.com if you are interested. Thanks!
Mandy, we can't videoconference regarding Three Cups of Tea this year because we have moved on. We are still collecting pennies, but we are committed to some other videoconference activities in the next couple of months. I would be interested in planning on incorporating videoconferencing with Three Cups of Tea for next year. Let's keep in touch!
